The Most Dangerous Game

In preperation for our next novel, "Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, we will be reading the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. The story is set on a remote island in the 1930s owned by a hunter named Zaroff. On to the island comes Rainsford, a world famous hunter who came ashorte after falling overboard off his ship. What ensures raises questions about the value of human life.
  1. What is the purpose of the shipboard conversation between Rainsford and Whitney?

  2. How does the author attempt to get the reader to root for Rainsford against General Zaroff? How does this increase the suspense in the story?

  3. If you were to write an up to date version of this story, how would you change it? What would you change in terms of setting, characters and plot?

  4. Why does Zarroff suggest Rainsford wear moccasins?

  5. What caused Rainsford to believe Zaroff knew he was hiding in the tree? Do you think he was right? Give reasons.

  6. How does Zaroff stock his island with “game?"

  7. Do you believe that Rainsford’s views on hunting will change as a result of his experience on the island? Support your answer with at least two reasons.

  8. What are your reactions to the story? In particular, what do you feel this story says about the value of human life?

  1. 1. To talk about the geography of the island they were going to.

  2. 1 To discuss the geography and the inhabitants along with the history of the land.

2 Zaroff is acting like the villain because he kills people when they lose his game.

3 I would make it easier to comprehend and add more action.

4 So his footsteps don't show as well.

5 Zaroff chuckled looking at the tree. No I think he would have shot Rainsford the chance he could get.

6 People in the ship wrecks are forced to play the game, meaning the sailors are the stock.

7 Yes. Rainsford now knows how the animals feel.

8 As i've always thought its not any more valuable than an animals.

  4. 2. Because Zaroff is a psycho. HE KILLS PEOPLE! I really want to know what he does with the bodies. Like, does he bury them? Does he eat them? DOES HE MAIL THEM TO GWAR'S HOUSE?!? WHAT DOES HE DO WITH THEM???

    3. I would add more bizarreness and a sense of unexpectedness.

    4. So that his prints are harder to track, DIZZY-DAWG!

    5. He added elements that made it seem like he knew he was hiding. And I think he was right, because he didn't want to kill him right then, he wanted to scare him more and keep having HIS SICK SENSE OF ENTERTAINMENT!

    6. Everyone who is stranded there has to play. THEY HAVE NO CHOICE!

    7. Possibly. Because he is in a situation that hunted animals are in.

    8. WHO DECIDED THAT HUMANS ARE MORE IMPORTANT OR SUPPERIOR TO ANIMALS???!!!!???? (Not saying I wouldn't eat McNuggets or KFC...)

-SaNcHo is voting for "America Must Be Destroyed" as album of the year! (Even though it's almost 20 years old.)

  5. 1- to talk abot the land and water terain.

2- to show the differce between good and evil.

3- I would make it with machine guns and have more killings in it and make the plot more intresting.

4- Well for one they make less noise and two the do not make a much of a trail of scent.

5- Well Rainsford saw zeroff smile and laugh.

6- hemake the water aroud his island more dangerous, and by doing so he make people and their boats craskh so they have to go to his island.

7- Yes. I thinks this because he now knows what it feels like to be the animals shoes.

8- That human life is now bad or bettter than any other life.
