In this chapter, Miranda nurses her family through the flu, learns terrible news about Peter and the damage caused by influenza and adverts a fire caused by the wood stove. Matt is left weakened by his illness.

The condition of the family at the beginning of the chapter is their sick but their not that bad any more besides Matt but Johnny and Mom are much better. What happened to peter is he died from the flu and most of the hospital staff died but half of them are still alive. Miranda still writes in her journal despite all that is going on with her and her family because in case she dies and someone finds her journal they can now she loves and cares a lot about her family. The family was sick and Miranda took care of them so Miranda believes that they can survive no matter what happens to them. Mom stops herself mid conversation to tell Miranda shes a very special woman because she took care of mom, Matt, Johnny and took care of the fire in the sun room all by herself. Matt is really weak and cant get up the stars hes worse than mom and Johnny he cant really do anything around the house anymore also Miranda feels this means for the family is that they don't have that much help around the house or they don't have someone that strong to help out besides Johnny and that the family might lose a family member if Matt dies.

Miranda is still doing her jornal because she think she is going to die soon and thinks somebody will find the jornal.
The wood stove get some snow in the chimney abd smoke came in to the sunroom.
The mom seys this because Miranda is handiling things really well.
Matt is still sickand if he dose not get better the famliy is doomed.
