Celia's Story - Connection to the Real World

In chapter 14 of House of the Scorpion, we learn how Celia came to be the possession of El Patron. Could something like this really happen? Do coyotes really exist? Today we will be reading chapter 1 from the book First Crossing: Stories About Teen Immigrants, edited by Donald R. Gallo. The chapter is a story entitled First Crossing by Pam Munoz Ryan. It is the story of a teenage Mexican boy heading to America with his father in search of work to help support their family back home. They enter the United States with the help of a coyote.
  1. What is the coyote? Dangers?

  2. Why did Marco and his father want to go to the United States?

  3. How did Marco’s father’s absence affect his life?

  4. How did Marco’s father go about getting a job once he was in the United States?

  5. What’s a gringo?

  6. How did Marco and his father get into the United States? How did the 9/11 attacks affect their journey?

  7. What is La Migra?

  8. What happened on their first crossing attempt? How many attempts did it take?

  9. Why was the football game important?

  10. What will Marco and his father do after both have entered the United States?

  11. Plot Marco’s journey with Google Maps. (Tijuana, Mexico to Encinitas, California) How many miles did he travel? How long would it take?

  12. House of the Scorpion Connection: Along with the producing opium, what other role(s) does the country of Opium serve for Aztlan and the United States.

  13. House of the Scorpion Connection: Compare and contrast Marco's journey with Celia's journey.

  14. House of the Scorpion Connection: Compare and contrast the coyotes in both stories.

5 comments:

  1. 1. Someone who crosses Mexican immigrants illegally. And its dangerous because it's illegal.

    2. A higher salary.

    3. He felt lonely.

    4. Working in the fields.

    5. A foreigner.

    6. They got in through the coyote. And 9/11 effected their journey, simply because foreigners attacked the twin towers, and Marco and his dad were foreigners as well. So their not as trusted as they once (sort of) were.

    7. Someone who's going to help them get in.

    8. The first time they were caught, the second time they didn't.

    9. The guards wouldn't look through as much cars, seeing as how there would be too much traffic, because of the football game.

    10. Marco's father wants to get a job with a higher payroll.

    11. A few.

    12. Help decrease illegal immigrants.

    13. Marco got in without being screwed over, while Celia got screwed over.

    14. Coyotes were not helpful in House of the Scorpion, but coyotes actually did help in First Crossing.

  2. 1- The coyote was a girl and the dangers were trusting the coyotes.

2- To get money for marco's family

3- it made feel worried like marco's father would not come back.

4- it went good because instead of making 7 dollars a day he made about 70 dollars a day.

5- a gringo is an american man

6- That is because it made it harder to make false documents.

  3. 1 The coyote smuggles people into the US. This could be dangerous by resulting in arrest.

2 Like all other immigrants do, to make money and support their families.

3 Marco was scared without his father because he did not want to be seperated from him and what would happen if they ended up seperated(father in US, Marco in Mexico).

4 He was going to work in the fields to get more money than what he would get at home.

    5 A white

6 The guards of the borders would be more aware of terrorists and thoroughly check cars.

    7 The Miggration

8 They were caught by border guards

9 There was enough traffic that the guards wouldnt notice.
