Ender's Game - Chapter 9 (Part 2)

  1. Why isn’t Ender able to join in the laughter and good times that his “friends” have?
  2. Would you describe Ender as depressed or suicidal? Explain your answer using evidence from the book.
  3. How does Graff impress upon Valentine how important Ender is to humanity?
  4. In what way does Graff play upon Valentine’s feelings for Ender and use them against her?
  5. Does Valentine’s letter have the intended effect? What is the outcome- Ender’s rejection of Valentine or his embracing of Peter? Why does this help him move on in the fantasy game?

  1. 1. He was working his fingers to the bone. He really didn't have time for laughing nonsense.

    2. Sorta. I mean, he probably does think about it, but overall, I think he's working so hard, he really doesn't have time to think about anything. So, really, I don't think he has time to think about or even kill himself.

    3. He has a story that would take many days to complete...

    4. He keeps luring her in and weakening her shield and emotions for Ender. What a Richard...

    5. He thinks that the snake represented Valentine. UH-OH SPAGHETTI-O'S!

  2. 1 Ender is now a leader and does not have time to laugh and hang out, he is very isolated now.

2 I would not be surprised if he were suicidal, Ender has been separated from his family and is always isolated at a young age.

    3 Its very ironic.

4 That Valentine is the only one Ender really cares about, and all he has been is depressed.

5 Valentine's letter makes him feel like he is being used and he no longer wants that. The Peter situation he wants to be kind rather than mean or violent.
