Hunger Games - Chapter 18

Chapter 18 (p. 233-244)
Katniss records her first direct kill of a tribute, killing the boy from District 1 that speared Rue. Katniss sings to Rue as she dies of her injuries. Katniss acknowledges the difference of killing humans; however, keeping her promise to Rue has become extremely important to her and she will do whatever it takes to win.

A rule change is about to change the game in a radical way.

  1. What has happed to Rue?

  2. Whom does Katniss place blame for Rue’s death? Dues it surprise you that it is not the boy from District 1?

  3. Why does Katniss decorate Rue’s body with wild flowers?

  4. Has Katniss’ opinion of killing changed?

  5. Where has the sponsor’s gift come from? Why?

  6. What does Katniss realize about her “first kill?” (p. 243).

  7. What new rule is announced to the Tributes?

5 comments:

  1. 1 Rue died by a spear.

2 Katniss blames the Capitol, and i am surprised she did not blame the boy. The boy's actions led to Rue's death then again the Capitol's did as well.

3 To show Katniss cares about Rue, and that the Capitol does not have control over them.

4 Yes. Katniss relates the boy to an animal and realizes many people would weep over the boy.

5 A loaf of bread from District 11 parachutes down to Katniss most likely in thanks of decorating Rue in flowers.

6 That Katniss intended to kill the boy, and many people are mourning him.

7 Two tributes can win as long as they are in the same District.

  3. 1. She got stabbed in the belly by a spear.

    2. She blames the capital. And personally, I'm not surprised, because she believed that the capital had more of a motive to do-him-off than the D1 kid did.

    3. To show that she will always be her home-skillet.

    4. Yeah, because she has a more in-depth experience with it, this time around.

    5. Bread, from D11. Probably to repay her for her trouble decorating Rue's grave.

    6. Guilt is a very heavy thing...

    7. As long as your in a district with another kid, you qualify for winning the match...

-Mr. BuNgLe is SQUEEKY CLEEAN this time around!

  5. Chapter 18 Comprehension Questions

    1. Rue died because the boy from one threw a spear at her chest.

    2. She doesn't blame herself or the boy from district one for Rue's death since we're all trying to win the game. She chose to blame Rue's death on the Capitol since they put everybody in a situation where they need to kill each other to survive. The boy from district one looks weak, especially in death.

    3. Katniss decorated Rue's body with flowers since she wanted to show the capitol that they don't own her or anybody else in all of Panem. She wanted to shame them, show them that the blame is on them. Rue was more than a piece in their game. She decorated the body since they'll need to show it on screen since they always demonstrate the removal of a tribute. Rue looks like she's asleep.

    4. Her opinions about killing have changed since she wants the careers to pay for what happened to Rue. Although she hates the capitol, she will always hate the other tributes; that will never change. She ready to kill anybody in sight, but nobody shows up even they would know that she's frail at this point in the games.

    5. The sponsor's gift came from district eleven. It's the first time that this has ever happened. It must've been for Rue, but Haymitch authorized it to be given to Katniss. It was a loaf of bread, and it must've cost them a fortune. She lifts her face towards the sunset and thanks the people of district eleven.

    6. As she starts to fall asleep, she begins to dream of when Rue got speared by the boy, and when Katniss shot an arrow in the boy's neck. She wonders to herself why she cares so much, and later realizes that it's because it was her first kill. Katniss starts to think about some more and thinks that Glimmer and the girl from four could have also been her kills since Katniss did drop the nest on them. But the boy from one was the first person she knew was going to die at her hands.

    7. A new rule was announced by Claudius Templesmith. Both tributes from the same district will be declared winners if they're the last two alive. Katniss takes some time to process the rule just added. Moments after she starts to call Peeta's name, shouting it from the top of her lungs.
